In-House Alternative Provision (AP) at Abbey Park Primary School

Abbey Park Primary School > Class Pages > In-House Alternative Provision (AP) at Abbey Park Primary School

Our in-house Alternative Provision (AP) offers a nurturing environment designed to support pupils who may find aspects of the mainstream school day challenging. Led by Miss Barkley, the AP room provides a flexible and responsive space where children’s individual needs are recognised, respected and supported through a carefully tailored programme of child-led activities.

The AP is timetabled for specific children whose needs align with the support offered. It provides a much-needed break from the demands of the classroom, helping pupils regulate emotionally, develop confidence and re-engage with learning in a positive way.

What We Offer:

  • Soft starts & Morning Check-ins: Our popular ‘Toast Club’ offers a calm and welcoming start to the day, supporting emotional readiness for learning.
  • Sensory Interventions: Activities like slime-making, oobleck, and hands-on sensory play help children explore and soothe their sensory profiles in a safe, supportive space.
  • Forest School & Outdoor Learning: Weekly sessions in our dedicated Forest School and Pond Area encourage connection with nature, problem-solving and resilience through outdoor exploration.
  • Drop-ins at Breaktime: Key children can access the AP room during unstructured times for a quiet space to regulate and reset.
  • Free Play & Peer-led Activities: Opportunities for free play and peer-led sessions promote independence, choice and social development.
  • Lunchtime Support: Collective lunch preparation and mealtimes are spent in a calm setting, with an attuned adult supporting communication, turn-taking and social interaction.
  • Cooking Sessions: Cookery activities help children build life skills, confidence and teamwork in a practical, engaging way.

Why AP Matters

Alternative Provision offers more than just a break from the classroom – it provides a space where children can feel safe, valued and successful. Children who access the AP build strong, trusting relationships with Miss Barkley and other peers, which fosters emotional security and helps them re-engage with school life. All activities are adapted to each child’s specific needs and interests, ensuring a personalised approach that promotes wellbeing, inclusion, and growth.
