Sensory Processing Support

The Mainstream Autism Base (MAB) is designed to meet the diverse needs of pupils, particularly those with sensory processing differences. It provides calm, low-arousal environments where children can develop specific skills in a space where they feel safe, supported and comfortable.

Development is supported through a wide range of activities, including multi-sensory learning, structured play and relaxation opportunities. The environment is purposefully designed to reduce sensory overwhelm, featuring neutral-coloured walls, minimal displays and quiet zones to create the best possible conditions for learning.

Inclusive Learning Spaces

Inclusive workstations are available throughout the school, allowing children to work in quieter spaces near their classrooms without needing to access the MAB. Within the MAB itself, there are additional quiet work areas where children can complete tasks with support or independently in a low-arousal setting tailored to their individual needs.

Regulation Rooms

Regulation Rooms provide a calming, sensory-safe space where pupils can relax, self-regulate or take sensory breaks throughout the day. These rooms include features such as:

  • LED sensory flooring
  • Adjustable mood lighting
  • Weighted blankets and toys
  • Bubble tubes
  • White noise or calming sounds

These spaces are personalised to help pupils feel secure and calm and are regularly reviewed to ensure they remain supportive and inline with our current cohorts needs.

Sensory Provision

Every child has personalised sensory support based on input from the child, their family, specialist staff and relevant external professionals. Sensory provision is flexible and responsive, ensuring that each child’s unique sensory needs are recognised and supported.

This may include:

  • Support with diet, food sensitivities and eating routines
  • Adaptations to uniform for comfort and sensory tolerance
  • Individualised workstations and classroom seating plans
  • Access to sensory regulation tools

Examples of proprioceptive and sensory resources available include:

  • Wobble cushions
  • Spinning chairs
  • Mini trampettes
  • See-saws
  • Fidget tools and other sensory aids
