Welcome to our Mainstream Autism Base (MAB). We offer 18 places for neurodivergent pupils who are autistic and have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

The MAB is a nurturing and inclusive space where we celebrate the strengths and unique perspectives of autistic pupils. We provide additional specialist educational support for pupils whose academic needs align well with a mainstream curriculum, but who benefit from autism-specific approaches to help them thrive and reach their full potential.

Pupils attending the MAB access the national curriculum alongside their peers in mainstream classes, while also having access to tailored support, reduced-sensory environments and structured personalised routines. Our provision is flexible and responsive, designed to meet each pupil’s individual needs in a way that values their identity and promotes wellbeing.

We provide specialist support for a wide range of needs and differences often experienced by autistic pupils, including:

• Social communication and interaction
• Information processing
• Flexible thinking and transitions
• Emotional regulation and self-awareness
• Sensory processing
• Understanding identity and neurodiversity
• Executive functioning skills
• Mental health and anxiety
• Support with masking and authentic self-expression

We work from an inclusive, strengths-based perspective. Pupils are supported and encouraged to attend mainstream lessons with appropriate and reasonable adjustments in place. Our approach is pupil-led and adaptable – recognising that needs can change over time.

Children also benefit from small group learning opportunities within their class, as well as individual, paired or group sessions with specialist autism-trained staff. These sessions are designed around each pupil’s strengths, interests and areas for development. The amount of time a pupil spends in the MAB varies depending on their needs, but we always promote as much participation in the wider school community as is appropriate for each individual.

Admission to the MAB is managed by Worcestershire County Council, not directly by Abbey Park Primary School. For any queries about placements or provision, please contact your child’s EHCP co-ordinator at Worcestershire County Council.
