Our Amazing Work!
Welcome to Year 2!
We can’t wait to welcome you back to school and into Year 2!
This year, you will be taught by Mrs Downes, Mrs Reynolds and Mrs Reynolds.
A few reminders:
- PE days are Monday and Friday – please come to school wearing your PE kit.
- Please make sure all jumpers, coats, water bottles and other belongings are clearly labelled.

2025-2026
We have butterflies!
As part of our Science topic, we have grown our own butterflies! We cared for them as caterpillars, watched them turn into chrysalis and then emerge as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies.
We will soon let them free into the big wide world!
Aspiration Day!
Year 2 were visited by a Midwife who shared what a Midwife is, what skills are needed to be a good Midwife and what a baby needs to be happy and healthy. The children had the opportunity to hold a baby doll, pretend to feed it and check it’s heart rate using a stethoscope.
Year 2 had a great time at Lower Smite Farm enhancing and applying their science topic all about plants! The trip involved exploring the gardens, making seed bombs, walking through the woodland and recreating trees using natural parts. What a super day we had!
In English this half term we have been reading The Dragon Machine. To help us understand the story and use descriptive language, we created our own dragon machines!
In Art this half term, we have been using clay to create 3D sculptures – coil pots! To create these successfully, we learnt how to roll clay into long, thin coils and using scoring to join pieces of clay together.
In Computing this half term we have been learning about computer programming. We have written algorithms (ensuring each instruction is in the correct order), programmed Beebots and debugged any problems.
In Art we have been learning about spiral shapes in preparation for creating a spiral clay pot at the end of this half term. We used chalk to practise creating this shape.
World Book Day!
What a super day filled with great costumes and lots of opportunities to enjoy a story. We read outside in the sunshine, completed a book scavenger hunt and enjoyed sharing a book with some of the Year 7 children.
In Maths we have been learning all about length, height, mass, capacity and temperature. We enjoyed looking at the mass of real objects and measuring the length and height of classroom resources using a metre stick.
This half term in Art, we have been learning about the artist Keith Haring and have created artwork inspired by him. We learnt he first created his artwork using chalk and he would make his cartoons look like they were moving by adding short lines to the outside. He filled his artwork in with bright colours!
This half term’s D&T focus has been food technology. We have learnt how to safely prepare and chop different fruits and vegetables. We planned and made a salad for a buddy, which included fruits and vegetables they liked. We have done lots of food tasting and careful cutting!
Aspiration Day!
Year 2 had a visit from a Dog Groomer, Ella, who shared what her job involves, the skills needed and she showed us some of the equipment used. Ella then did a mini groom on Raffi, one of Mrs Scully’s dogs, and he was such a good boy!
Year 2 have been busy creating bunting in Design and Technology lessons!
They began with a plan where they considered who the bunting was for (visitors of our school) and the purpose of the bunting (to show we live in the UK). They then thought about the details of what material they would use, the shapes, the colour and the decoration.
Following their plans, the children created their own bunting and joined it using glue or a simple running stick.
We are really proud of this work!
The MYSTERY object…
On Monday, a mystery object appeared in the Year 2 classroom. It was large, covered in a blanket and had lots of different messages stuck to it. In English, we discovered the messages were different sentence types (statements, exclamations, commands and questions). We sorted them into the correct groups and identified the commands ‘Do not touch!’ and ‘Do not stare!’ so we knew that was what we needed to follow.
On Tuesday, the mystery object appeared with a bag! A bag filled with honey, a notepad, pencils, a picture of a bear and a NOTE! We noticed in the note, there were words that sounded the same and we learnt these were called ‘Homophones’. Throughout Tuesday Year 2 became even more excited about the mystery object and some children ‘touched’ it and ‘stared’ at it …
This meant on Wednesday, the mystery object disappeared! All that was left was the blanket and the messages.
Fortunately on Thursday, the commands had been removed from the blanket so we bravely touched the blanket to see what was underneath. It was a … stool! We were so confused because the mystery object was definitely larger at the beginning of the week.
Friday came, we weren’t sure what it would bring, but luckily for us the mystery object became clear! There, sat in the corner of our classroom, was a large white teddy reading our new focus book – The Bear Under The Stairs.
We are excited to read the story and find out more!
We have begun our Spring 1 Science topic ‘Living things and their habitats’. The children enjoyed exploring our local area – the school grounds – to see what different habitats we have. We remembered, plants and animals have habitats and a habitat has everything a plant or animal needs to survive (water, food, shelter and air).
In Year 2 we have begun our Spring 1 Geography topic ‘Let’s explore the UK’. The children enjoyed exploring what was in the ‘topic box’ to discover lots of clues for what this topic might be about! We look forward to learning about the countries in the UK, their capital cities and some of the human and physical features we could visit in the UK.
Y2 loved their aspiration day! We learned all about musicians and the skills required to become one. We then had an actual musician play their guitar and sing for us!
Look at the super trioramas Y2 have made!
In DT, we have been creating trioramas based on our locality. We worked super hard and we persevered!
In maths, we have been looking at adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. We used the base ten to support us. Super work, Year 2!
