Our Amazing Work!
The whiteboard pens, glue sticks and felt tips decided to quit after hearing the story The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. The year 1 children wrote fantastic persuasive letters to get them back.
Year 1 are enjoying learning about the Easter story in RE. They made Easter story spinners to help re-tell what happened during Holy Week.
Year 1 have enjoyed learning about healthy snacks.
During our design and technology lessons we learnt how to cut fruit safely and how to mix all the ingredients together to make a tasty, healthy, snack.
During the Spring 2 term year 1 will be learning all about:
- Maths: Adding and subtracting within 20, number place value up to 50, how to compare and measure lengths and heights and about mass and volume.
- English: Continuing to learn and practice writing sentences, applying our phonics knowledge to our spelling and how to make our writing exciting by using adjectives and verbs. We the start the term by learning all about letters, using the book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt as inspiration.
- Science: Continuing to learn about the different animal groups and comparing them.
- History (topic): Learning about significant individuals, looking at Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart.
- PSHE: Learning about money. What we need it for and how we can look after it.
- Religious Education: Why does Easter matter to Christians?
- Design and technology: How to design and make a moving picture.
- Music: Continuing to learn about pulse, rhythm, pitch, melody and tempo by listening to music, singing, playing the glockenspiel and creating our own music (improvising and composing).
- Computing: Learning about data and information. We will also be continuing with e-safety lessons which we do throughout the academic year.
- Physical Education: Exploring dance.
Year 1 loved our messy doubles lesson.
Year 1 have learnt about Neil Armstrong so created their own rockets.
Spring 1 in year 1
Year 1 will be learning all about:
Maths: Numbers up to 20 and how to add and subtract within 20.
English: We will be using the book Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers and animal fact files to inspire our writing all about penguins.
Science: We will be exploring animals – mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and birds. We will also look at omnivores, carnivores and herbivores.
Religious Education: How should we care for the world and for others, and why does it matter?
Geography: We will be looking at seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK and the location of hot and cold areas of the world (Equator, North and South poles.)
PE: Gymnastics
Music: Learning about pulse (steady beat), rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics. We will be doing this through listening to songs, singing and exploring the glockenspiel.
Art: Exploring mark marking (drawing).
DT: Exploring food technology.
PSHE: We will be finishing off exploring who is special to us. We will then learn what helps us to stay healthy.
KS1 Christmas Nativity: The Innkeepers Breakfast
Year 1 really enjoyed creating firework / bonfire night dioramas in DT.
Year 1 loved applying their knowledge of colour mixing and making colours lighter and darker when creating their own version of Wassily Kandinsky’s Concentric Circles.
Year 1 have been learning about aerial maps in Geography. They really enjoyed making an aerial map of the classroom.
Year 1 have been learning all about primary and secondary colours. They have really enjoyed learning how to mix and make secondary colours. The children have also learnt that they can make a colour lighter by adding white or darker by adding black.
Year 1 have been enjoying their trips to the computer room. They have been learning how to use a mouse.
Year 1 have explored adding this week. Learning how to split a number into its parts using a part-whole model.

Here are a few things about September….
Here is what we will be learning in the Autumn term:
- In maths we will be learning all about numbers 0-10, adding and subtraction within 10, 2D and 3D shapes.
- In English we will continue to practice our phonics and learn how to write sentences.
- In Science, we will be learning all about our bodies and our senses.
- In Geography, we will be learning about our local area and how to create a map of our classroom and school.
- In History, we will be learning all about Guy Fawkes (Bonfire night) and Remembrance Day.
- In art, we will be exploring colour, learning how to mix primary colours (red, yellow and blue) to make secondary colours (green, purple, orange).
- In PSHE, we will be exploring the Zones of Regulation further.
- In computing, we will learn how to use a computer.
- In music we explore how to use instruments.
- In Religious Education, we will learn about Christianity and what they believe.
- In Design and Technology we will be creating freestanding structures and dioramas.
In year one the children come dressed in their PE clothes when it is a PE day. Our PE days will be on Monday and Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, when I have my planning and assessing time outside of the classroom, the children will be taught by Mrs Martin.
Please remember to label everything! Jumpers, water bottles, bags, etc… Please could you also send your child to school with a spare pair of pants in case accidents happen.
2023-2024
Year 1 have been exploring 3D art. They produced these wonderful 3D Sunflowers!
Year 1 loved aeroball on thrill day.
Year 1 painting their clay sunflowers.
Year 1 had a fantastic day out at Bishops Wood. The children went on a woodland walk, made potions and perfumes from nature, went on a plant colour hunt, made a large flower from sticks and twigs, went pond dipping and finally went on a minibeast hunt.
In art we have been exploring sculpture and three-dimensional artworks. Using their knowledge of sunflowers from science, the year 1 children have created their own sunflowers from clay.
In writing, year 1 have continued the story Cops and Robbers by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. Miss Vickery is super proud of their creative writing outcomes!
Year 1 have loved retelling and innovating the ‘The Three Little Pig’s” story both practically and in writing.
Year 1 love their new fidget board!
In writing we have been learning about time adverbials (first, next, then). We practiced making bird feeders so we could use our time adverbials to write instructions all about making a bird feeder.
Year 1 learnt all about weaving during their Design and Technology day.
Year 1 loved boogie bounce!
Year 1 have loved exploring the seasons during the year. They have shown fantastic understanding and knowledge.
Year 1 had a fantastic World Book Day!
In art Year 1 have been exploring primary and secondary colours, colour mixing, tone and shade and types of line and shape. The children then explored abstract artists Trudy Benson, Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky and used their artworks to inspire their own pieces of art.
Their first abstract piece was based upon a woodland scene. The children turned a picture of the woods into abstract art by using different types of lines, colours and shapes.
Next they created their own version of Wassily Kandinsky’s Squares with Concentric Circles.
After hearing the story The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt the year 1 felt tips, glue sticks and whiteboard pens decided to quit too. They left a letter for the year 1 children complaining about their lids being lost. The children used their phonics knowledge and newly developed letter writing skills to write back to the felt tips, glue sticks and whiteboard pens, promising to treat them better.
The children have really enjoyed playing this phonics game! The children work together to sound out the sentence to the person wearing the sentence hat. Miss Vickery has been super impressed with their sounding out, blending and writing.
During DT day the children learnt all about free standing structures and dioramas. We used the story Tiddler the story telling fish by Julia Donaldson to inspire our underwater themed dioramas.
The children were fantastic during the KS1 Whoops A Daisy Angel performance!
In writing, the children have been using the storybook Tiddler and the story Storytelling Fish by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler to inspire their writing. Our current focus is on using accurate punctuation. All the children have been working hard to ensure they include finger spaces between words, capital letters and full stops.
In the outdoor year 1 classroom, the children have taken part in lots of activities to develop their fine motor skills, maths, writing, phonics and art. For example, the children have been creating their own stories through drawing and Lego, re-creating stories in the water tray, practising writing words and creating rabbits from our ‘junk’ modelling.
The children have really enjoyed learning all about computers and their parts during our weekly visits to the computer room. Some children have even designed their own computers and laptops.
